The month started off on the cool side with high temperatures mostly in the 60's during the first seven days of the month. The forecast panned out well for precipitation as it was drier than normal while February came in cooler than normal thanks to the average monthly low temperature being 4.7° below normal. On the precipitation side, the forecast leaned toward below normal at a 45% chance. The February outlook for the area, issued by the Climate Prediction Center on January 31st, called for a 47% chance that temperatures would be above normal & 20% chance that temperatures would be below normal. One month remains in climatological Winter and so far it has been warmer (55.7° or +2.3°) and slightly drier (1.62" or -0.18") than normal. The International airport, which is the official recording spot in Tucson, recorded 0.28" which is over a half an inch below normal and ranks as the 38th driest January on record, tied with 1929. However there were isolated spots that recorded up to a three-quarters of an inch /0.75"/. ![]() Rainfall amounts across the metro area, using several sources like, the Pima County Regional Flood Control District gages and CoCoRaHS, were mostly below a third of an inch /0.33"/. This is the 3rd straight January in which the monthly low temperature, recorded at the airport, was NOT colder than 30°. Temperature extremes for the month ranged from a high of 77° on the 7th to a low of 31° on the 2nd. The monthly average temperature of 54.3° is seven-tenths of a degree above normal and ranks as the 17th warmest January on record. The airport recorded a gust of 46 mph which is the 3rd highest wind gust recorded in January in the past 50 years. The most notable day was on the 28th where wind gusts ranged from 20 to 40 mph with localized spots recording gusts between 45 and 55 mph. A few of those dry systems did bring very gusty east winds to the area. Rainfall totals across the area for both events were mostly less than a tenth of an inch. Only two systems, one on the 18th and the other late on the 22nd into the 23rd, brought mostly light precipitation to the area. High temperatures for the remainder of the month were on a roller-coaster ride ranging between 64° & 77° as a handful of weather systems moved through the state. And for only the 9th time since 1895, rainfall was recorded on both New Year's Eve & Day with the most recent being in 2018-19 & 2016-17.Ī colder air mass was in place on the morning of the 2nd with low temperatures across the metro area ranging from the mid 20's to the lower 30's. The airport two-day total of 0.74" ranks as the 3rd wettest New Year's Eve/Day on record. The combined two-day rainfall totals for New Year's Eve/Day across the metro area ranged from 0.50" to 1.50" with the bulk of the rain occurring on New Year's Eve.
